The AVIR 2023 Annual Meeting was held in Phoenix, Arizona, marking a significant “reunion” year as the organization co-located once again with the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) and the Association for Radiologic & Imaging Nursing (ARIN).

The 2023 meeting was designed to foster collaboration across the entire interventional team. The curriculum emphasized the critical role of the technologist in the “Interventional Suite of the Future,” focusing on new workflows for stroke, trauma, and complex embolization that require seamless communication between the IR technologist, nurse, and physician.

The program offered a mix of technical “how-to” sessions and high-level clinical updates. Key learning outcomes included:

• Stroke Intervention: Updates on mechanical thrombectomy workflows, specifically reducing “door-to-puncture” times and the technologist’s role in rapid room setup.

• Embolization Mastery: Techniques for using advanced liquid embolics (like Onyx and glue) and understanding the physics of different coil packing strategies for aneurysms.

• Vascular Access: “Tips and Tricks” for difficult access, including pedal and radial approaches, and the use of ultrasound guidance by technologists.

• Radiation Safety: Implementing the latest dose reduction protocols to protect both the patient and the operator during long, complex cases.
